Abstract

Although the concepts and principles of Life cycle costing are very well established and practiced by the construction industry, what is lacking is the incorporation of the environmental impacts of the design options into the selection criteria and thus the application of the concept of Total Life cycle costing of the project. The concept of Total Life cycle costing developed earlier suggest, that different relevant environmental impacts associated with each design option be converted to the financial format and added to the calculated values of Life cycle cost of the design option. However the situation is complicated by the introduction of the concepts of design for disassembly into the design options, and the resulting requirement to distribute the environmental impacts over different life cycles of the component design assemblies throughout their useful life.
