Abstract

The film, Beyond #MeToo, explores the use of music to challenge our culture of male violence against women. It captures the experiences of Concordia university music therapy professor and students/alumni as they listen to women’s stories in pop culture and then create their own songs and music videos giving voice to their own understanding of male violence. Their songs are the ultimate testimony to resilience, resistance and empowerment. Filmmaker and university professor, Sandi Curtis, is a music therapist with over 20 years of experience in social activism and work with women and girl survivors of violence.

The purpose of the Beyond #MeToo Project is to eliminate male violence against women on campus and at large - locally, nationally, and internationally. It is a project run with, by, and for university students to ensure that their voices can be heard and honoured. They gathered together to explore our current culture of male violence against women, to listen to music of women singer/songwriters challenging patriarchy, and to create their own songs and music videos. Through creating their own music, they experienced the power of music for personal and sociocultural transformation. See the official website for more information and individual segments of the video.
