Abstract

In this chapter, we will argue that although difficulties may be at the core of alexithymia, externally oriented thinking (EOT) comprises a substantial part of the construct and its measurement. EOT is not defined in terms of problems, but rather of preferences – for practical matters, rather than the nuances of emotional life. In this chapter, we will argue that a similar set of preferences is quite common in a number of cultural contexts and demographic subgroups.
