In this master's thesis, the author translates from English to French a part of an introductory book on the cinema entitled Film Studies, by Andrew M. Butler, published in Great Britain in 2002. To facilitate the translation, he creates an English-French cinema lexicon, since no tool of this kind currently exists in Quebec. He examines his translation work in the light of Christiane Nord's theories, which were specifically designed for pragmatic translations. Through this examination, he shares with the reader his reflexions on theory and practice in translation, using a comparison between theory and practice in translation and the relationship of Sigmund Freud to theory and practice in medicine. He supports his statements with those of renowned authors in the field of translation studies. Important terms. translation, translation studies, theory, lexicon and cinema
