In 2017, we launched an international ideas competition, titled “MORE THAN WAITING FOR THE BUS” to explore the important, yet complex design question of how spaces sur- rounding transit stops can be altered to let commuters feel that they are doing more than simply standing around and waiting. You can find the brief of the competition on pages 112 to 119. The competition brief asked young designers from around the world to propose contemporary pieces of design that could help invigorate the space surrounding four bus stops in the city of Montreal. The intention of this endeavor was to explore how these solely utilitarian, and often mun- dane, locations could become interactive, poetic, critical and meaningful spaces highlighting the significance of nature, art, and design. Alongside the design ideas, the challenge also sought a series of design principles that could be adap- ted to the general design of sites surrounding bus stops.
