Embargoes
Embargoes
Embargoes are used in academic publishing to restrict access for a specified period of time. Reasons for embargoes include a pending patent, trade secrets, or publishers’ marketing strategies. Consult with the publisher’s site or Open Policy Finder to learn about specific embargo periods. For the submitted version, authors typically retain copyright, and no embargo period usually applies. For the accepted version, embargo periods range from (6) six to (24) twenty-four months.
When you embargo your Spectrum record, the document is not publicly available for a set period. However, details such as title, author, and abstract will be visible. Once embargoed, users may request access.
How to embargo?
Uploads [tab] - Visible to - select Registered Users Only. Embargo expiry date - indicate the date that the embargo will expire.
Details [tab] - Users may request access as long as a correct email is provided in the Contact Email Address. Access requests prompt a request to the depositor, who may accept or refuse.
Thesis Embargoes
Consult with your supervisor, subject librarian, and target publisher to consider the pros and cons of embargoing your thesis.
Upon deposit, a thesis can be embargoed for up to two years. For example, if you submit your thesis in March 2013 and choose to place a two-year embargo on it, select 2015 April 1st. The thesis will be made available on April 1st, 2015. If you would like to request an extension, submit your request with an explanation to thesis@concordia.ca.
