Abstract
This study explores the television current affairs documentary as it relates to civic engagement. It presents an argument for considering mass media as legitimate learning sites. In particular, through a case study approach, the documentary film is shown to be a vehicle for creating a community of learners whose actions lead to social change. The potential for harnessing the influence the documentary can exercise is further explored through a discussion of new technologies for disseminating information. The results of this study contribute to the field of knowledge in adult education and informal modes of learning, social movements and mass media, and their implications for democracy.
