Abstract

L’image du dirigeant arabe telle que représentée dans le fameux ouvrage de l’auteur égyptien Gamal al-Ghitani intitulé Zayni Barakat et les « transformations » qu’elle a subies durant le processus de traduction sont au centre de ce mémoire. En guise de mise en contexte, les deux premiers chapitres font la lumière sur l’évolution qu’a connue la littérature arabe moderne et son état actuel. Ils mettent aussi l’accent sur le statut de l’auteur arabe qu’ils comparent à celui du traducteur de littérature arabe notamment en français et en anglais. Dans ce cadre, ils mettent en exergue les conditions difficiles dans lesquelles a lieu la production littéraire arabe et la situation relativement avantageuse qui est celle du traducteur par rapport à l’auteur même de l’ouvrage traduit, l’arabe étant une langue dominée au moment où le français et l’anglais sont des langues centrale et hyper-centrale respectivement.
L’analyse est effectuée suivant le trajet analytique que propose Antoine Berman. Elle se fonde surtout sur les trois concepts de base que sont la position traductive, le projet de traduction et l’horizon du traducteur. Ce trajet dévoile deux approches diamétralement opposées vis-à-vis de la traduction : les ouvrages français et anglais objet de l’analyse s’avèrent être des modèles de traduction ethnocentrique et exotisante respectivement. Ils sont jugés en fin de compte selon les critères de poéticité et d’éthicité proposés par Berman qui permettent notamment de corroborer la théorie bermanienne conformément à laquelle toute première traduction est imparfaite et appelle une retraduction.

The image of the Arab leader as represented in the famous novel by Egyptian writer Gamal al-Ghitani entitled Zayni Barakat and the “transformations” it underwent through the translation process are at the center of this thesis. The first two chapters set the stage for the analysis by shedding light on the evolution and current state of Arabic literature. The status of the Arabic language author is also emphasized in comparison with that of the Arabic literature translator especially into French and English. Against this backdrop, the difficult conditions of Arabic literary production are highlighted as well as the relatively advantageous situation of the translator as compared to that of the author of the translated novel, Arabic being a dominated language while French and English are central and hypercentral languages respectively.
The analysis follows the analytical method suggested by Antoine Berman. It is mainly based on three basic concepts : the translative position, the translation project and the horizon of the translator. This method reveals the existence of two diametrically opposed approaches to translation : the French and English versions prove to be models of ethnocentric and foreignizing translations respectively. They are evaluated in the end according to the criteria of poeticity and ethicality suggested by Berman that corroborate Berman’s theory according to which every first translation is imperfect and calls for a retranslation.
