Abstract

Abstract
Humour in Art Therapy
Lindsay Ficara
This qualitative research paper uses theoretical data in an attempt to understand the use of humour in art therapy primarily with an adult population suffering from a psychiatric disorder. The existing literature on the use of humour in the fields of psychotherapy, psychiatry, psychology, creative arts therapies, occupational therapy, and counselling informs this theoretical research. The focus of the research is currently underdeveloped, therefore, the objectives are to provide a synopsis of the variety of humour approaches that has been used in therapy and to highlight the opportunities and challenges of using
humour in art therapy. This research paper includes an examination of representations of humour as well as therapeutic humour. Neurological responses to humour and humour development are explored. Finally, further thoughts on the reviewed literature as well as recommendations for future areas of research are offered.
