Abstract
This thesis looks at how the Franco-Russian alliance was celebrated and promoted between 1890 and 1914 through the creation of a popular material culture. As no study has been done on the matter before, this thesis will be able to give a fresh perspective on this alliance, which is usually analyzed in regard to the First World War. This research draws upon primary sources including illustrated newspapers, postcards, songs and various objects. Before the Grande Guerre, the alliance underwent many changes regarding its goals and its promotion, but these were not necessarily reflected in the official material culture. This study will thus be interested in the disparities and continuities during three key periods of the Franco-Russian alliance and will try to understand the fundamental narratives that were promoted to the public. This will allow us to recognize not only if the idea of a friendship between France and Russia existed but also the extent to which official material culture was able to permeate the everyday life.
