Abstract

This presentation will describe a collaboration between a digital projects & systems development librarian and biologists. Data visualization methods are necessary during the exploration and analysis activities of an increasingly data-intensive scientific process. In collaboration with biologists, software that converts DNA data sets into interfaces was developed and described in a PLOS One publication (https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0143615). In this application, images are generated and then processed as multi-scale images to be accessed through a web-based interface that supports zooming, panning and sequence fragment selection. Nucleotide composition frequencies and GC skew of a selected sequence segment can be obtained through the interface. The software was used to generate DNA data visualizations of human and bacterial chromosomes. The software and its source code was made available for download and further development. This presentation will describe the development process, including the choice of open source licensing and research data management.
