Abstract
This thesis explores the spaces and spatial practices that inform the independent Anglophone music scene in Montreal, Quebec. This scene incorporates elements of Do-It-Yourself (DIY) culture, which resists mainstream influences and dominant modes of production. Through a participant-centred ethnography incorporating 16 participants and archival research, this study documents tactics that have allowed the scene to persist despite changing urban pressures. DIY spaces, that is, those places that have gone unregulated and have allowed for unique, boundaryless cultural production, are the central focus. Looking at space and place as configurations of cultural practice with fluid boundaries, I consider the longevity of this music scene at the crossroads of the old and new, its history and its future, and its networks and structures. The theoretical framework draws on Henri Lefebvre’s theory of the production of space, Michel de Certeau’s tactics and strategies, and Doreen Massey’s understanding of spatial temporality, illuminating how scenes are dynamic processes, shaped by ongoing negotiations of space and authority. Case studies of past and present DIY spaces illustrate the scene’s adaptability and reliance on ephemeral, often hidden, spaces for music production and consumption. I conclude that a scene is a story and practice of space: through action it becomes inscribed into the environment, and through refigurative action it is maintained, forming a path legible to those who share in its rhythms, histories, and spatial practices.
