Abstract
Stem cell transplants are used to treat a variety of medical conditions, including cancers such as leukaemia and lymphoma, as well as other blood disorders. Stem cell donor registries worldwide are successful at recruiting new registrants; however, many potential donors decline confirmatory typing (CT) when called upon. This research examines the role of expectancy beliefs, namely state optimism and perceived self-efficacy, in the intention of registered potential stem cell donors to schedule the CT appointment after being requested. The research further examines how an intervention designed to increase state optimism influences the intention to schedule CT, using a serial mediation model. An experimental research design was implemented, and two online surveys were used to collect data. In Study 1, as predicted, state optimism had a significant positive effect on intention to schedule the CT appointment. State optimism also had a significant positive effect on perceived self-efficacy, which, in turn, predicted the intention to schedule the CT appointment. In Study 2, the same mediation pathway was observed. However, the intervention did not have a significant effect on state optimism, perceived self-efficacy, or intention to schedule the CT appointment. The findings of this research provide valuable insights into the psychological mechanisms underlying intentions to schedule a CT appointment and offer practical suggestions for stem cell donor registries. These insights can guide the design and implementation of initiatives to improve donor retention at this crucial point in the donor journey.
