Abstract

Edwidge Danticat is a young Haitian writer, who, established in New York since the age of twelve, writes her work in English. We have translated three of her short stories into French: ±The Missing Peace», ±Graduation», ±Seven», wondering whether the author belonged to the Haitian writers of the tradition and what the peculiarities of her imagination were. This thesis is divided into four parts. At first, we present the author's biography, the remarkable success of her writings with the American public and her relation with Haitian literature. The second part concentrates on the theories we have used in the thesis: Bakhtine's dialogism, Greimas' notion of isotopy and, especially, the ethics of translation according to Berman. The third part is the translation of the three aforementioned short stories. This translation is done with the help of the principles outlined in the second part. The fourth part focuses on an analysis of the texts in the light of Bakhtine's and Greimas' ideas (source texts) and Berman's (source and target texts).
