Abstract

The construction industry is a major contributor to waste generation and resource consumption in Canada (Earle et al., 2014), detrimentally affecting our environment. Reimagining ways to reuse
construction waste can foster more sustainable industry practices. This thesis investigates which construction waste materials have untapped potential and how they could be reused responsibly within the built environment and design. The research develops new material composites from construction waste for use as interior objects, demonstrating how waste can be revalued. By examining the socio-cultural, economic, and political factors shaping waste management and wasting behaviour in Canada and Montréal, and through interviews with stakeholders involved in local waste management and reuse, the study highlights the subjectivity of waste and its shifting value. A review of industry waste management practices and Montréal waste statistics identified gypsum and aggregate as underutilized materials. Collected through field work at local construction sites, these materials led to recycled gypsum, a potato starch-based construction residue biocomposite, and a SCOBY-based construction residue biocomposite prototypes. Supported by a theoretical investigation into how value is created and a critical engagement with waste’s agency, the prototypes were used to create functional décor objects such as coasters, trays, a bowl, candle holders, and vases. A lamp shade and chess set were also made. Lastly, a group interview was conducted to assess, from an outside perspective, how well the materials were valorized.
